Undergraduate Residency
Requirement

Purpose

Helping students prepare for a lifetime of success is at the core of everything we do at Hollins. Experiences in and outside of the classroom are essential to a well-rounded education. That's why preserving a residential campus - part of the Hollins mission - is so critical. Students perform stronger academically, learn greater leadership skills, gain a larger network of friends and contacts, and enhance physical and spiritual development as an active, engaged member of the Hollins Community.

Hollins University is a smoke-free community. Smoking is prohibited in all
apartments, houses, and residence hall areas. This includes individual
rooms, restrooms, and common areas.

Requirement

As a residential university, undergraduate Hollins students are required to live on campus to enable them to fully benefit from their Hollins experience.

The only exceptions include:

  • Horizon students
  • Students who are 23 years or older
  • Students who live with their parents and/or guardians in Botetourt County, City and County of Roanoke, City of Salem, and the Town of Vinton
  • Students with spouses and/or children

Requests for exemption

Any other exceptions must be brought to the director of housing and residence life for review/approval based on the following process.

  1. Students seeking an exception must submit a written request, with appropriate documentation, to the director of housing and residence life. The request must detail the nature and reasons for the exception. All requests for off-campus housing must be received by April 1 of each year for returning students, and by June 15th for first year or transfer students.
  2. The director of housing and residence life will review the request and work with other campus departments as appropriate in determining if an exception should be recommended.
  3. The dean of students will review the information and make a decision, which will then be communicated via letter to the student by the dean.
  4. Permission to live off campus will only be granted for one academic year and students must request an exception each year.
  5. Requests after this date may not be granted. Students are reminded that signing a lease prior to being approved to live off campus does not constitute an exception to this policy.

If you are still considering living off campus, please read, complete, and return the Exemption from Residency Policy form.
