Courses in Leadership Studies:

BLI 101:
Leadership Skills (4)
This course has three components: skills seminar, leadership lab, and communication skills group. The skills seminar seeks to familiarize participants with contemporary leadership theories and styles, as well as refine presentation, conflict management and negotiation skills. The lab provides opportunities for students to practice their skills with senior students in a videotaped setting. Communication skills group provides a small group experience for support and challenge as participants work toward a specific individual goal. Open to first-year students. No prerequisite. Offered both terms.

BLI 201: Leadership Project (2)
In this course participants design semester leadership projects with individual goals relevant to the participant's leadership development. Participants will meet weekly to discuss project progress and provide support and challenge to others while integrating feedback received from fellow participants. Before course completion, students will write an experience summary that integrates theory with their leadership practice. Prerequisite: BLI 101 and an introductory leadership seminar. Offered both terms.

BLI 211: Leadership Experience Seminar (2)
This course provides integrative discussion for students who are completing or have completed an experiential component toward the leadership studies certificate. Experiential components could include (but are not limited to) experiences in: Hollins Outdoor Program (HOP), service learning, internships, or study abroad. Participants will journal regularly and respond to inquiries regarding their leadership development. Prerequisite: BLI 101 and an introductory leadership seminar. Offered both terms.

BLI 471, 472: Leadership Capstone (2, 2)
This course seeks to provide participants with training and practice in nonprofit board governance. Participants will serve on the BLI advisory board or a local approved community board, performing committee tasks and board-related functions including financial statement and budget analyses and fundraising. Participants will also conduct leadership labs and provide mentoring for students in the leadership skills class. Continued work on leadership development and individual goals will occur in the leadership integration group. Before course completion, students will write an experience summary that integrates theory with their leadership practice. Prerequisites: BLI 210 and BLI 211. BLI 471 offered Term 1; BLI 472 offered Term 2.
