Hollins Falls to Cross Town Rival

Roanoke, VA - Hollins University Volleyball vs Roanoke College, October 22, 2013

Box score

For the final time this season, the Hollins volleyball team looked to defend their home court in ODAC play.  Cross-town rival Roanoke College made the short trip from Salem, VA to face a Hollins squad wanting to finish the home portion of their schedule with a win over the Maroons.

Hollins got just what they wanted by taking a quick 6-2 lead in the opening set.  However, Roanoke College went on a big run to take their first lead of the match.  The Maroons extended their lead and pulled away for a 25-14 win.  Roanoke road their wave of momentum by opening up a five point lead early in the second set.  Hollins rallied after the Maroons pulled away but in the end, the home team could not close the gap and fell behind two sets to none.  The visitors wasted no time in gaining control of the third and, ultimately, final set.  Roanoke won the third set, 25-13, and the match, 3-0.

Haley Ortiz recorded a team high 14 digs

Junior Lauren Hays (Saginaw, TX) recorded a match high 14 kills on her 28 attacks and accounted for four of Hollins five blocks.  Lela Moore (Woodleaf, NC) handed out a match high 19 assists while Haley Ortiz (Portsmouth, VA) led the team with 14 digs.

Roanoke College was led at the net by Samantha Klostermann and her 10 kills while Macey Tyree, Carrie Heldreth, and Allison White added six kills apiece.  Jessica Block and Alexandria Martin combined to dish out 30 assists on the Maroons 36 kills.

Hollins will finish the season with a four match road trip, the first stop being on Friday night at Bluefield State College.  Hollins defeated the Blues, 3-0, back on October 3rd.
