Strong Start Can't Stop Yellow Jackets

Roanoke, VA - Hollins University Volleyball vs Randolph-Macon College, October 10, 2013

Box score

After facing first place Washington and Lee on Saturday, Hollins hosted second place Randolph-Macon on Thursday night.  The Yellow Jackets came into the matchup with Hollins having lost just once during ODAC play.

Hollins started strong against the favored Jackets, matching Randolph-Macon point for point during most of the opening set.  The scored was tied at 16-16 but a 3-0 Macon run earned a bit of breathing room for the visitors.  Every time Hollins looked to cut into the lead, Randolph-Macon kept them at arms length winning a tight first set, 25-21.  The second set saw the home team build an early 6-3 lead.  However a 7-0 run by the Yellow Jackets put momentum clearly on the side of Randolph Macon.  Hollins battled but couldn't overcome the deficit and fell, 18-25, giving the Jackets a 2-0 lead.  A weary Hollins squad once again kept it close and trailed 9-11 in the third set.  Randolph-Macon went on a 9-1 run to build an insurmountable lead and took the match, 3-0.

Lauren Hays accounted for three Hollins blocks

Middle Lauren Hays (Saginaw, TX) recorded 12 kills, four digs, three blocks, and a service ace.  Jessie Deese (Cary, NC) had six kills and a team high nine digs while Rikki Martinez (Corpus Christi, TX) added five kills and five digs.  Lela Moore (Woodleaf, NC) handed out 21 assists and Emily Lowther (Woodbridge, VA) had six digs, a block, and a service ace.

Randolph-Macon enjoyed a 43-27 advantage in kills, led by Tori Puryear and Courtney Lowers with 10 kills apiece.  Bailey Troia and Riley Martin combined for 37 assists and Libero Marli Dabareiner recorded a match high 13 digs.

Hollins will be on the road for a pair of matches before returning home for the final time this season on Tuesday October 22nd.  Hollins will play host to cross-town rival Roanoke College at 7:00pm in their 2013 home finale.
