Hornets Sting Hollins

Wednesday night saw Lynchburg College come to town for an ODAC volleyball match.  The Hornets came into the match with a 4-1 conference record.  Hollins was looking to gain their second ODAC win of the season and took the lead early in the first set.  Hollins kept the lead until about the midway point in the set.  The Hornets went on a run to capture the lead and go on to a 25-20 opening set win.  Hollins started the second set as hot as they were in the first but Lynchburg battled back to tie the set at 12-12.  Lynchburg won 13 of the next 17 points en route to a 25-16 win.  After the break, Hollins again took the lead in the set and this time held on to take the third, 25-21.  Hollins started the fourth set looking to rally and tie the match but Lynchburg took command early and went on to a match clinching 25-11, fourth set victory.

Simone Mendez (Gardena, CA/St. Bernard) led a balanced Hollins attack with six kills, two service aces, 13 digs, and two total blocks.  Briana Taborn (Creedmoor, NC/South Granville) and Ally Reed (Sterling, VA/Dominion) each added six kills and combined for three total blocks.  Setter Angie Moreno (Houston, TX/Elsik) handed out a team high 23 assists while Lauren Hays (Saginaw, TX/Boswell) and Mandi McDade (Eustis, FL/Eustis)  combined to record nine total blocks.

The Hornets recorded 44 kills, 10 by Aricquel Payne.  Salem, VA's Rachel Turk added a match high 36 assists, four kills, and eight digs.  Elena Kritter won nine straight points on her serve in the first set and added a match high 27 digs.

Hollins will travel across town to compete in the Roanoke College Tournament this Friday and Saturday.
