Hollins Opens Season at Cougar Classic

Danville, VA - Hollins University Volleyball vs Greensboro, Methodist, Guilford, and William Peace in 2013 Cougar Classic at Averett University August 31 - September 1, 2013

The Hollins University volleyball team took the court for the first time this season when they traveled to Averett University to compete at the 2013 Cougar Classic.  Hollins was scheduled to play four matches during the two day event.  On Saturday, Hollins faced a pair of USA South opponents, Greensboro and Methodist, before finishing the event on Sunday when they face ODAC foe Guilford and William Peace.

Hollins started off the season with a hard fought five set win over Greensboro College.  After splitting the first four sets, Hollins won the fifth set tie breaker, 15-13, to win their first match of the season.  In the nightcap, Hollins raced out to a 2-0 lead over Methodist, but the Monarchs rallied to tie the match and then held on for a 15-12 win.

On Sunday, Hollins started fast against the Quakers by taking the first set 25-23.  The next two sets went back and forth but in the end it was Guilford who took a 2-1 lead by winning both sets, 25-21.  Hollins fought hard but fell, 3-1, to their rivals to the south.  In their fourth and final match, a weary Hollins squad was no match for the Pacers and fell to William Peace in straight sets.
