ODAC Tilt Goes Hollins Way

Roanoke, VA - Hollins University Volleyball vs Eastern Mennonite University, October 10, 2012

Box Score

After going 2-2 at the Roanoke College Tournament over the weekend, Hollins stepped back into ODAC action on Wednesday night when they hosted Eastern Mennonite University.  Hollins and EMU both came into the match looking to pick up their first ODAC win of the season.

Hollins wasted no time, jumping on their visitors from Harrisonburg early by opening a 6-1 lead in the first set.  However, the Royals wouldn't go down without a fight as they battled back to even the set before Hollins pulled away late and took the opener 25-18.  The second set was much like the first with Hollins taking an early lead before a Eastern Mennonite comeback, but the end was the same and Hollins found themselves one set away from their first conference win.  Another hot Hollins start saw the home team take a quick 4-0 lead but this time the Royals came all the way back to seize control of the set.  When the fourth set came to a close, the visitors had gotten back into the match with a 25-16 win.  With all the momentum, Eastern Mennonite raced out to a six point lead early in the fourth.  Hollins found themselves down 19-14 when senior captain Ally Reed (Sterling, VA) took her turn at serve.  Five straight Hollins points later and the set was tied at 19-19.  Both teams traded points until, with the set tied at 24-24, Hollins scored consecutive points to take the match in a thrilling 26-24 fourth set victory.

Reed led Hollins with 10 kills and 29 digs.  Lauren Hays (Saginaw, TX) recorded eight kills and Haley Ortiz (Chesapeake, VA) added seven.  Setter Lela Moore (Woodleaf, NC) handed out 25 assists and Emily Lowther (Woodbridge, VA) served four aces.  Amelia Eyles (Millwood, VA) and Hays each took part in six blocks to lead the Hollins defense at the net.

Eastern Mennonite got 13 kills each from Sara Ritchie and Rachel Kennel.  Mattie Lehman assisted on 36 of the Royals 46 winners.  EMU recoded 99 digs led by Karla Martin, 23, and Lehman with 19.

Hollins will travel to Guilford looking to repeat the victory that they had over the Quakers back at the beginning of September.  The  ODAC match is scheduled for Friday night at 7:00pm in Greensboro, NC.
