Hollins Struggles on the Road

Buena Vista, VA - Hollins University Volleyball at Southern Virginia University, September 17, 2013

Box score

The Hollins University volleyball team was back on the road on Tuesday night.  After hosting a pair of ODAC foes at home, Hollins stepped out of conference for a trip to face Southern Virginia University.  It marked the first of back to back games for Hollins as they prepare to travel to Emory & Henry tomorrow night.

The home standing Knights raced out to an early lead before Hollins started a comeback that saw the score at 13-14 when Southern Virginia took a timeout to stop the visitors run.  Both teams traded points for the next several minutes and Hollins trailed by just two, 17-19, heading into the final portion of the opening frame.  However, Southern Virginia ended the set with a flurry and took the opener, 25-18.   Hollins started the second set on fire, building an early 9-3 lead.  But once again the Knights closed the gap and re-took the lead en route to taking a two set lead, 25-19.  The road weary Hollins squad was no match for their hosts as Southern Virginia took the third set, 25-13, and the match, 3-0.

Lauren Hays on the attack

Lauren Hays (Saginaw, TX) led Hollins with 12 kills on 16 attacks as well as one service ace and a pair of blocks.  Jessie Deese (Cary, NC) added six kills, five digs and a block.  Setter Lela Moore (Woodleaf, NC) handed out 18 assists and Haley Ortiz (Portsmouth, VA) led the way with seven digs.

Tori Tuttle led the Knight attack with 13 kills while McKenzie Weaver added 11 kills and five digs.  Katelynn Tlustek recorded 34 assists, four digs, and five of the Southern Virginia service aces.

Hollins will be back in ODAC action tomorrow night when they travel to face Emory & Henry College.  Hollins will look to exact a bit of revenge as the Wasps won an early meeting this season.  The match is scheduled to begin at 7:00pm.
