Cross Town Battle Goes to Roanoke

The Hollins University volleyball team traveled across town to face Roanoke College on Wednesday night.  The Maroons came into the match sitting just one spot ahead of Hollins in the ODAC standings while Hollins took the court looking for their first conference win of the season.

Hollins looked to get off to a quick start and did just that with a 25-22 opening set victory.  The lead was short lived as the home team evened the match with a second set win, 25-16.  Hollins looked to regain the lead going into the third set but Roanoke outlasted their visitors 25-19 to take their first lead of the match.  Hollins battled to even the score but in wasn't to be as the Maroons protected home court by taking the fourth and deciding set 25-19.

Senior Ally Reed (Sterling, VA) played a solid overall match by recording 15 kills, two service aces, and 16 digs.  Lauren Hays (Saginaw, TX) had six kills while Haley Ortiz (Chesapeake, VA) added five.  First-year setter Lela Moore (Woodleaf, NC) handed out 32 assists and came up with 13 digs. 

The Maroon offense was led by Macey Tyree, 12 kills, and Sarah Long, 11.  Alexandra Martin dished out 19 assists while Shannon Stone added 18.  Mackenzie Allen served three of Roanoke's nine aces.  The Maroons combined for 15 blocked Hollins attacks led by Long and Allison White with four each.

Hollins will travel back to Salem on Friday as they prepare to compete in the Roanoke College Tournament.  Hollins will face UVa Wise at 3:00pm before facing Averett University at 5:00pm.
