Generals End Hollins Season

Lexington, VA - Hollins University Volleyball at Washington & Lee, Quarterfianls of ODAC Tournament November 2, 2011

Box Score

In just their first full season back in the ODAC since 2004, the Hollins University volleyball team earned a berth in the 2011 ODAC Tournament.  Hollins came in as the eighth seed and had to travel to face ODAC power Washington & Lee on Wednesday night.  The Generals had beaten Hollins 3-0 in an earlier season match but Hollins was looking to avenge that loss and advance in the tournament.  W&L jumped on their visitors early but Hollins battled and kept the set close.  The Generals were able to pull away late and take the set 25-17.  Washington & Lee used the momentum of the first set and cruised to an easy win in set two.  After a short break, Hollins got back into the match and pushed the top seed but it wasn't enough as W&L went on to the set and match win.

Junior Ally Reed (Sterling, VA/Dominion) led Hollins with eight kills and five digs.  Briana Taborn (Creedmoor, NC/South Granville) added four kills and two service aces while setter Jessie Deese (Cary, NC/Apex) led the team with six assists.  Mandi McDade (Eustis, FL/Eustis) and Morgan Russell (Peoria, AZ/Liberty), both first-year players, each recorded a team high seven digs.

Lindsey Dee (12) and Rachel Guarisco (11) each recorded double digit kills for Washington & Lee.  M.A. Boles added nine kills, a service ace, and seven digs while Corinne Hemmersbach led the match with 39 assists.

Hollins finished the season with an 8-21 record.  With only one senior on a young squad, the future looks bright for a program that was able to make the ODAC Tournament in their first try.
