Hollins Falls to Host in Finale

Sunday afternoon marked the finale of the 18th annual Cougar classic hosted by Averett University. Hollins brought a 2-1 record into their final tournament match were they faced the host Cougars of Averett.

Hollins used a nine kill effort to take the first set from their host by the score of 25-22. Averett reversed the tide in set two by besting Hollins by the exact 25-22 score tying the match at a set apiece. The Cougars seized control of the match behind their third consecutive double-digit kill effort by downing Hollins 25-17. Four matches in 24 hours took its toll on Hollins as they were no match for Averett in the fourth and deciding set and fell to the Cougars 3-1.

Senior Ally Reed (Sterling, VA) recorded 10 kills to lead Hollins. First-year setter Lela Moore (Woodleaf, NC) led the team with 26 assists and three assisted blocks. Jessie Deese (Cary, NC) and Haley Ortiz (Chesapeake, VA) each recorded 13 digs while Moore added 11 and Reed nine. Lauren Hays (Saginaw, TX) and Moore each served three aces for Hollins.

The Cougars were led by Allison Sparks and Sarah Sparks with 14 and 13 kills respectively. Nicole Barringer handed out a match high 49 assists while Allison Sparks led the way with 22 digs.

Hollins will take their 2-2 record into the Hollins University Invitational that starts play on Friday. The seven team event will kick off with Virginia Intermont and Emory & Henry at 1:00pm on Friday.  Hollins will begin play at 3:00pm when they face Meredith College.
