2007-08 Season Highlights

Spring 2008

The Hollins tennis team took third place at the season-ending Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) Tournament held at Sweet Briar College April 25-27. Hollins defeated Randolph-Macon 6-0 in the quarterfinal round, but then lost to second-seeded Bridgewater, 5-4. However, the team rebounded the following day to beat Virginia Wesleyan 5-4 to clinch third in the 11-team tournament. Maggie Bai '09 went 2-1 at number one singles and teamed with Mary Sheridan '11 and Nathalie Faure '11 to go 3-0 at number two doubles. Anne Ailstock '11 was undefeated in three matches at number five singles and won another match at number one doubles with Sarah Budrus '11. Sarah Sullivan '08 won two matches at number six singles and picked up two more wins at number three doubles. The Hollins team combined for 15 wins against only nine losses during the three-day event. Seven players were named to the all-tournament team: Bai, Faure, Budrus, Sheridan, Ailstock, Sullivan and Tiffany Robinette '10.

Hollins' tournament performance follows a third-place finish in the ODAC for the regular season in which the team compiled a 12-4 record overall, 10-3 in the conference. Team members selected as All-Conference include Maggie Bai (First Team Singles and Doubles), Nathalie Faure (Second Team Singles and First Team Doubles), Sarah Budrus (Second Team Singles and Doubles), Mary Sheridan (Second Team Singles and Doubles), Anne Ailstock (Honorable Mention Singles and Second Team Doubles), and Sarah Sullivan (Honorable Mention Singles and Second Team Doubles).

The Hollins tennis team earned a huge Old Dominion Athletic Conference win on March 8 with a 5-4 upset over Virginia Wesleyan on the Marlins' home courts. Virginia Wesleyan was picked second in the ODAC preseason poll, one spot ahead of Hollins.

With the overall match tied 4-4, first-year player Sarah Budrus won a three-set match in a tie-breaker. The win brought Budrus' record to 3-1 for the week and she was named ODAC Women's Tennis Player of the Week.

Fall 2007

The Hollins tennis team started the fall season with a strong showing at the Virginia Women's Tournament, winning all six Flights of the event and improving on its showing in the fall 2006 tournament when Hollins won five of the six Flights.  Maggie Bai '09, Sarah Budrus '11, Katie Dotson '11, and Sarah Sullivan '08 each won singles Flights in this year's tournament.  Budrus teamed with Anne Ailstock '11 and Dotson teamed with Andrea Moreau '10 to capture Flight titles in doubles competition as well.

At the ITA Regional Tournament, Moreau won her first two matches and advanced to the round of 16, while Ailstock and Budrus teamed to make another tournament final. In all, Hollins won 12 total matches.

The fall season culminated at the Fall ODAC Individual Championships hosted here at Hollins.  Out of the 12 total Flights Hollins won 21 matches and was represented in the finals in eight of the 12 Flights.  Only ODAC and national power Washington & Lee had a better showing.

After another successful fall the team and head coach Leslie Bernard look to carry their momentum into the spring season that starts in February.

Hollins placed two players on the 2007 All-ODAC Second Team:

  • Maggie Bai '09 (Number Two Singles)
  • Barrett Jones '07 (Number One Singles)

Fall 2006

The Hollins University tennis team enjoyed a great fall 2006 season, dominating two of the three events in which they competed.

At the Virginia Women’s College Tennis Championship, Hollins captured all four singles flights and one of the two doubles flights. The team followed up that performance with a strong showing at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Regional at the University of Mary Washington. The season concluded with Hollins hosting the second annual Fall Festival, a two-day event that featured fellow Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) members Roanoke College, Bridgewater College, and Emory & Henry College in competition. Hollins won four of the six flights, including both doubles flights.

In individual achievement, Barrett Jones ’07 and Maggie Bai ’09 made two finals each in Flight A singles, with Jones winning both times for tournament titles. Candice Dalton ’07 won a title and a runner-up finish in Flight B singles, and teamed with Jones to win a doubles championship. Also picking up finals victories in the fall were Amy Blouet ’07, Christine Han ’09, Andrea Moreau ’10, and Lucy Thompson ’08.

Overall, Hollins won nine of a possible 18 flights in the three tournaments in which they participated last fall. Hollins opens the Spring 2007 season with a trip to ODAC power Washington & Lee University on February 28.

The Hollins tennis team competes in a fall season, which is primarily made up of tournament play and a few dual matches. This format enables new college players to get more match experience without the extra pressure of a dual match. They continue off-season through the winter by conditioning and strength training. The spring season kicks off in February and continues through April, where they compete in approximately 15 dual matches, tournament play, the ODAC Championship and hopefully on to the nationals.
Coach
Coach Leslie Bernard came to Hollins in 1997 and has compiled a record of 79-32. A Rutgers University graduate, Bernard played four years of Division I tennis. While she was at Rutgers, the team went undefeated in two fall seasons and finished second in the Atlantic 10 Conference behind Penn State. After college, Bernard taught tennis at private clubs and camps in New Brunswick, New Jersey, Charlotte, North Carolina and Atlanta, Georgia. While in Atlanta, she continued her on-court success by earning a number 1 ranking in 30’s for singles. Her peers selected Coach Bernard as Coach of the Year in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference.
