In 1986, Hollins opened the Mary Moody Northen Swimming Center and began a new chapter on the excellence of intercollegiate athletics at the university. Today the pursuit of excellence continues, with many milestones of outstanding swims marking the way. Two Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) championships and the selection of the entire team to All-Academic Team status set the pace. Kat Horton's ('97) wins in the NCAA Division III National Championship 100 and 200 butterfly were other high points along the way. In addition, team members continue to be selected for All-ODAC honors and academic honors from the College Swimming Coaches Association.

Jonathan Raines is making his debut as the new Hollins University head swim coach in the 2008-09 season. Jonathan comes to Hollins with 20 seasons of coaching experience, between club and high school teams. Jonathan most recently coached for Southfield Lathrup High School in Michigan, where he was the men’s and women’s head swimming and diving coach. He built both teams from humble beginnings into competitive teams, and his women’s team won the 2005 Conference Championship. Prior to his seven years at Southfield, Jonathan was the assistant men’s swimming and diving coach for Owosso High School in Michigan, where he had responsibility for the swimming portion of the team. He also has coached for the YMCA club swimming program.
During his distinguished coaching career, Jonathan’s teams have had 62 All-Conference Selections, 19 Conference Champions, over 20 pool records broken, many team records, state finalists and champions, and national qualifiers.
Jonathan was an accomplished swimmer himself at Corunna High School, and comes to Hollins with extensive experience in the sport. Jonathan received his B.B.A. from Baker College and his J.D. from Thomas M. Cooley Law School.

| 2007-08 Season Highlights |
The Hollins University swim team finished the 2007-08 season with four wins and six losses, an improvement over the previous season. This success resulted from a great blend of first-year and veteran swimmers.
A new ODAC schedule featuring many more tri- and quad-meets was the biggest challenge the team faced this year, but it was met with talent, energy and creativity. Highlights include strong showings at the traditional season-opening Green and Gold meet, the Yellow Jacket Invitational, and the ODAC/Atlantic States Championship, where several of our swimmers were individual standouts.
With the end of this season the team bids farewell to two members who epitomize the term “scholar-athlete.” In addition to her excellence as a swimmer, Crystal Clusiau, who graduated in December, created her own major, studied in Paris, was an active participant in the Batten Leadership Institute, and will receive the Hollins Wilderness Education Association Certification. Rianna Jones, who graduates this spring, was a team leader, both in and out of the pool. She studied in Japan, was active in the Batten Leadership Institute, and worked towards an honors thesis.
