Hollins Can't Catch Gators

Roanoke, VA - Hollins University Swimming vs. Notre Dame University of Maryland, January 11, 2014

For the second time in less than 24 hours, the Hollins swim team was in the pool against a conference opponent.  After falling to ODAC rival Bridgewater College last night, Hollins played host to ODAC swim member Notre Dame University of Maryland on Saturday afternoon.

Hollins started off the 11 event meet with a win in the 200 Medley Relay.  The home team won one of the next two events to take a lead early in the meet.  However, the Gators rattled off seven first place finishes in a row and despite taking the final event of the meet, Hollins fell to their guests 91-83.

The 200 Medley Relay team of Juanica Nash (Highland Park, MI), Rachel Hertzler (Toana, VA), Nora Fischer (Nashville, TN), and Julia Rogan (Roanoke, VA) posted a 3:34.37 time while securing first place points to start the meet.  Meg O'Brien (Chattanooga, TN) brought home Hollins first individual win of the afternoon when she finished first in the 200 Freestyle.  O'Brien added runner up finishes in the 400 Individual Medley, 100 Backstroke, and 100 Backstroke.

Hayley Caulfeild-James (Willow Street, PA) matched O'Brien with three second place finishes of her own.  Caulfeild-James finished runner-up in the 50 Freestyle, 100 Butterfly, and the 500 Freestyle.  Michelle Douglas (Chesapeake, VA) brought home a third in the 50 Freestyle before securing a second place finish in the 100 Freestyle.  In the final event of the meet, Douglas teamed with Nash, Rogan, and Fischer to win the 200 Freestyle Relay.

Hollins will be back defending their home water nest Friday when they host Ferrum College in a dual meet.  The meet with the Panthers is scheduled to start at 7:00pm in the Northern Swimming Center.
