Ferrum Bests Hollins

Roanoke, VA - Hollins University Swimming vs. Ferrum College, January 17, 2014

The Hollins swim team was back defending their home pool on Friday night.  The Panthers of Ferrum College came to Roanoke for a non-conference dual meet.  It was a rematch of a November meet, won by the Panthers.

Hollins got off to a quick start by winning the opening event of the meet, the 200 Medley Relay.  After just missing first place points in the next three events, Hollins broke through once again and took the 100 Butterfly with a season best time.  Having to swim in back-to-back events eventually took its toll on a depleted Hollins squad and despite several season best times, Hollins fell once again to Ferrum, 72-123.

Amanda Young (Henrico, VA), Grace Iaquinto (Huntington, WV), Rachel Hertzler (Toano, VA), and Michelle Douglas (Chesapeake, VA) won the meet opening 200 Medley Relay.  Iaquinto and Young each added a third and fourth individual finish later in the meet.

Hayley Caulfeild-James (Willow Street, PA) finished runner up in the 50 Freestyle then brought home third place points in the very next event, the 200 Individual Medley.  Swimming her third consecutive event, Caulfeild-James covered the field by over a second in winning the 100 Butterfly.  Her 1:14.20 time was the best 100 Butterfly time of the season for the first year swimmer.

Meg O'Brien (Chattanooga, TN) continued her strong J-term with another solid meet.  O'Brien scored a second place finish in the 200 Individual Medley, a third in the 100 Backstroke, and another runner up finish in the 500 Freestyle.

Hollins will travel to Hampden Sydney to face Frostburg State on Saturday afternoon.  It will be the second weekend in a row that Hollins will swim on back-to-back days.
