Knights Spoil Home Opener

Roanoke , VA - Hollins University Soccer vs Southern Virginia, September 4, 2009

The Hollins University Soccer team opened the 2009 season with a home match against Southern Virginia University on Friday afternoon.  The Knights out-shot Hollins en route to the 4-1 non-conference victory.

Hollins fell behind in the 16th minute when Kendra Heim scored on her own rebound to take a 1-0 lead.  Heim had a breakaway but her first shot was stopped by goalkeeper Kristen Norkus (Gainesville, VA/Battlefield), however Norkus was unable to get to the rebound before Heim found the net with a shot off of a very difficult angle.  Hollins tied the score 15 minutes later when senior Colleen Thamm (Manassas, VA/Battlefield), pictured left, scored on a rebound of her own.  Thamm was stopped on a breakaway but was able to beat the Southern Virginia keeper to the ball for her first goal of the season.  However the Knights broke the tie with less than five minutes to go in the half and took the lead into the break.  Two more Southern Virginia goals sealed the win 4-1 despite 14 saves by Norkus.

Southern Virginia got two goals from Taylor Osborn.  Kendra Heim scored a goal and added an assist while Melanee Guymon finished out the scoring with one goal.

Hollins will travel to Staunton to face Mary Baldwin on Saturday at 2:00pm
