Hollins Overcomes Opponent and the Elements |
Roanoke , VA - Hollins University Soccer vs Warren Wilson College September 26, 2009 |
|
Neither the visiting Owls of Warren Wilson College nor the steady and sometimes heavy rain can deny Hollins on Saturday afternoon. Despite being out-shoot the Hollins University soccer team stepped out of conference and came out with a hard fought 2-1 victory. Warren Wilson controlled the action for the first 10 minutes of the match but when Brooke Bruce (San Diego, CA/Mission Bay) floated a pass over the defense and Colleen Thamm (Manassas, VA/Battlefield), pictured left, hammered the shot home Hollins went out to a 1-0 lead. The match would remain tied thanks to two fantastic one on one saves by keeper Kristen Norkus (Gainesville, VA/Battlefield) with just six minutes to go until the break. With the rain coming down harder in the second half neither team could get much going until Megan Gold scored on an assist by Reily Kennedy to tie the score with about 25 minutes left in the match. Five minutes later Hollins was awarded a direct kick after Bruce was fouled just outside the box. The Owls built a wall but Thamm was able to bend it over the defenders and around the keeper for what proved to be the game winning goal. Warren Wilson out-shot Hollins 16-10 for the match but nine saves by Norkus helped to preserve the victory. Hollins will try to even their record when they travel to Emory & Henry on Tuesday night for a 7:00pm match. |
