Hollins Hosts Marlins in Home Opener

Roanoke, VA - Hollins University Soccer vs Virginia Wesleyan College, September 14, 2013

Box Score

Saturday afternoon marked the home and ODAC opener for the Hollins soccer team.  Hollins played host to Virginia Wesleyan College who came to town for their first conference matchup of the young season.

The game began with neither team getting much going on the offensive end of the field.  After a feeling out period of about 20 minutes, it was the visitors that drew first blood by scoring on a long range shot over the head of the Hollins keeper.  Three minutes later, Virginia Wesleyan added to their lead by scoring off a loose ball rebound to make the score 2-0.  As the half came to a close, the Marlins added a pair of tallies to take a comfortable 4-0 lead into the break.

The second half started with Hollins gaining some offensive zone time but despite a couple of scoring chances, could not beat the Wesleyan keeper to cut into the lead.  The young but deep Marlins used their considerable advantage in numbers to substitute freely and wear down the Hollins squad, as all the Virginia Wesleyan goals were scored from bench players.  As the final horn sounded it was the visitors that had come away with their first ODAC victory of the season, 7-0.

First-year keeper Megan McKee (Madison, AL) and her defensive teammates did all they could to keep the game within reach.  McKee recorded a season and career high 18 saves.  Dani Franklin (Chesapeake Beach, MD) and Ashton Holliday (Lewisburg, WV) led the Hollins offense in shots.

Virginia Wesleyan saw five different players score goals, led by Marta Deptula and Annie Hartman with two goals apiece.  Emily Sheridan, Sarah Nickle, and Catherine Galway each added a goal while Megan Gerhart went the distance in goal, stopping every Hollins shot that she faced.

Hollins be back in conference action on Wednesday when they travel to face Shenandoah University.  The game with the Hornets is scheduled to begin at 7:00pm.
