Weary Hollins No Match for Marlins

Roanoke, VA - Hollins University Soccer vs Virginia Wesleyan College October 24, 2009

Less than 24 hours after battling Averett University, Hollins hosted ODAC power Virginia Wesleyan on Saturday afternoon.  The Marlins used their entire 32 player roster to wear down Hollins en route to the 7-0 ODAC win.

The Marlins struck quickly when Stacey Zeiler scored on the first shot of the match.  The Hollins defense dug in and held the explosive Marlins to just 10 first half shots. Virginia Wesleyan started to wear Hollins down with a multitude of substitutions and after two goals in the opening stages of the second half Hollins trailed 5-0.  Hollins was able to keep the match close thanks to several good saves by keeper Kristen Norkus (Gainesville, VA/Battlefield), left, including 10 in the second half.  Norkus recorded 12 saves for the match.

Courtney Whorten and Christina Fernandes each tallied a goal and two helpers for the Marlins.  Zeiler, Katie Gradel, Jessica Edelman, Kristyn Anselmo, and Hanna Winkel also scored for Virginia Wesleyan.

Hollins will close out their 2009 regular season when they host Eastern Mennonite University on Tuesday afternoon. The match is scheduled to start at 3:30pm.
