Comeback Road Win for Hollins

Greensboro, NC - Hollins University Soccer at Guilford College, September 25, 2013

Box Score

After dominating play and coming up short on Saturday against North Carolina Wesleyan, the Hollins soccer team was back in conference action on Wednesday night.  Hollins traveled to face Guilford College in a matchup of teams in search of their first ODAC win of the season.

Hollins, looking for a quick start, took the play to their hosts for the opening minutes of the matchup.  However, it was Guilford that struck first when they scored on a long shot about 30 minutes into the first half.  Hollins again went on the offensive in a half that saw them outshoot the Quakers 14-5 in the opening half.  Five minutes after the initial Guilford goal, Hollins found an answer when Meg Moritz (Ashburn, VA) took a pass from Becca Logan (Culloden, WV) and sent her shot into the Quakers net to tie the game going into the break.

Less than five minutes into the second frame, Hollins took their first lead of the night.  Alyx Pelkey (Swanton, VT) scored the go ahead goal when she took a Logan pass and beat the Guilford keeper.

Moritz and Pelkey provided all the offense that the visitors needed as Hollins held on for the 2-1 ODAC win.  After handing out a pair of helpers, Logan now leads the team with 11 points (four goals and three assists).  Keeper Megan McKee (Madison, AL) recorded five saves in picking up her first conference win.

Leticia Benitez came off the bench to score the lone Guilford goal of the night.  Caroline Bishop assisted on the Benitez goal while Abby Gove stopped nine Hollins shots in goal.

Hollins will go for two in a row on Saturday when they play host to Eastern Mennonite University.  The game with the Royals is scheduled to start at 2:00pm.
