Panthers Rally Past Hollins

Ferrum, VA - Hollins University Soccer at Ferrum College September 4, 2013

Box Score

The Hollins soccer team opened their 2013 season with a trip to Ferrum College on Wednesday night.  The Panthers played host to Hollins under the lights in a non-conference matchup.  It marked the first of three consecutive road games to open the season for a Hollins squad looking to avenge last seasons overtime loss to the Panthers.

The first 45 minutes saw both teams struggling to get anything going on the offensive end of the field.  Ferrum saw the games first good scoring chance but Hollins first-year Megan McKee (Madison, AL) made a great slid tackle to thwart the Panthers scoring chance.  Hollins was able to get the ball past the Ferrum defense but couldn't put the ball in the back of the net and the game remained scoreless at the half.

After the break, Hollins had another great scoring opportunity and this time the visitors took advantage.  Dani Franklin (Chesapeake Beach, MD) took a pass from fellow senior Becca Logan (Culloden, WV) and beat the Panther keeper for the games first goal.  The Hollins lead was short-lived as Ferrum answered the Hollins goal to tie the game at 1-1.  The home standing Panthers dominated the final 25 minutes of play, scoring four goals, en route to a 5-1 season opening win.

Morgan Funck scored three goals to lead the Ferrum attack.  Meghin Martin added a goal while Annabelle Pivarnik scored a goal and handed out a pair of helpers.

Hollins will continue their road trip on Saturday as they travel to Warren Wilson for a 2:00pm start.
