Roanoke, VA - Hollins University Soccer vs Ferrum College September 2, 2012

Box Score

The Hollins University soccer team opened their 2012 season when the played host to Ferrum College on a hot, sunny Sunday afternoon. Hollins came into the matchup with the Panthers looking to get the new campaign off to a quick start.

Hollins struck quickly when junior Morgan Wood (Rocky Mount, VA) found the back of the net less than six minutes into the match. Becca Logan (Culledon, WV) found Wood open in front of the Panther keeper and Wood blasted it home to give Hollins a quick 1-0 lead. The lead was to be short-lived as Ferrum tallied twice in less than two minutes to regain the lead. Hollins wouldn't go quietly and about midway through the first half Logan scored the equalizer. Senior Sara Poole (Blue Ridge, VA) made a beautiful over the top pass to a streaking Logan for the goal and a halftime tie. The Panthers struck less than two minutes into the second stanza for their third goal of the afternoon. However, with less than 20 minutes to go in the game, Dani Franklin (Chesapeake Beach, MD) got the crowd back into it with a long bending goal that cleared the reach of the Panther keeper. Heat and fatigue were taking their toll as neither team could score and the game was tied, 3-3, at the end of regulation.

Five minutes into the first overtime saw Ferrum with a golden opportunity to end the game and senior Kara Pegram took advantage of the chance scoring her second goal of the game. Pegram took the ball after a scrum in front of the goal and beat first year keeper Brandi Chesne (Hammond, LA) to the corner of the Hollins net. Chesne was solid in goal recording 15 saves in her season and collegiate debut.

In addition to Pegram's two goals, Ferrum got individual goals from Brittany Baker and Morgan Funck. Antoinette Roland assisted on the Baker and Funck goals as both were scored off corner kicks.

Hollins will hit the road next weekend when they resume play. Hollins will travel to our nation's capital when they face Trinity College in DC at 3:00pm on Saturday afternoon.
