Hollins University

Staunton , VA - Hollins University Soccer at Mary Baldwin College, September 6, 2009

The Hollins University Soccer team traveled to Staunton to face Mary Baldwin College on Sunday afternoon.  After losing their home opener, Hollins went on the road and earned a decisive non-conference victory by defeating the Squirrels 5-0.

Brooke Bruce (San Diego, CA/Mission Bay), pictured left, got things going for Hollins when she scored on a pass from Erica Smith (Louisa, VA/Louisa) at the 17 minute mark of the opening half.  Bruce struck again just two minutes later when she scored on a breakaway.  Colleen Thamm (Manassas, VA/Battlefield) scored a goal for the second consecutive match when she received a pass from Mary Wells (Smyrna, TN/The Webb School) and put the ball in the back of the net.  Hollins closed out a strong first half when midfielder Sara Poole (Blue Ridge, VA/Lord Botetourt) scored on another Wells' assist.  Leading 4-0, Bruce completed the hat-trick when she scored her third goal of the afternoon giving Hollins a 5-0 win.  Kristen Norkus (Gainesville, VA/Battlefield) picked up her first career shut-out by stopping the only shot she faced.

Mary Baldwin struggled to get much going on offense and was out-shot by Hollins 21-3.  Keeper Erica Gaughan recorded 10 saves.

Hollins begins ODAC play when they host Sweet Briar College on Thursday for a 5:00pm start.
