Hollins Defends Home Turf |
Roanoke, VA - Hollins University Soccer vs Bluefield College October 6, 2011 On a beautiful Thursday afternoon, Hollins stepped out of conference to host Bluefield College at Moody Field. The game had been rescheduled from earlier in the season when it got postponed by the weather. Things didn't start well for the home team as the Rams scored on a breakaway less than 20 minutes into the contest. The Bluefield lead didn't last long as the Hollins offense, that had been struggling, struck five minutes later to tie the game. Hollins took the lead less than three minutes after the tying goal to take a 2-1 lead into the half. Both teams traded scoring chances until Hollins put the game away with a long distance goal. Hollins out-shot their visitors 19-10 en route to the 3-1 non-conference victory. Kelly Hunt (Broadlands, VA/Briarwoods) sprang forth from her defensive position to take a pass from Alicia Johns (Locust Grove, VA/Orange Co.) and beat the Ram keeper to tie the game for Hollins. Less then three minutes later, Hollins took the lead for good, when first-year forward Kelli Kitchens (Roanoke, VA/William Byrd) found the back of the net for the second time in the last three games. Erica Smith (Louisa, VA/Louisa) rounded out the Hollins scoring when she scored from long range to put the game out of reach. The defense and keeper Kristen Norkus (Gainesville, VA/Battlefield) made the score hold up by stopping five of the six shots that made their way on net. Courtney Bell scored the lone goal for the Rams. Hollins will wrap a four game home stand on Saturday when they host ODAC rival Bridgewater College at 2:00pm. |
