Vixens Can't Contain Hollins |
Sweet Briar, VA - Hollins University Soccer at Sweet Briar College October 19, 2011 The Hollins University soccer team had yet to taste victory within the tough ODAC this season. Despite the deepest and most talented Hollins squad in years, victories have been hard to come by. With only three games left on the season, Hollins traveled to rival Sweet Briar for an afternoon match up with the Vixens. Defense was the name of the game for the first half as neither team could find the net. The second half saw much of the same until the road team scored twice in a minute span to take a 2-0 lead. Hollins built on the lead with another goal just 10 minutes later. Sweet Briar wouldn't go quietly and scored to make it 3-1. The Hollins defense dug in and refused to let this one slip away as Hollins picked up the 3-1 ODAC win. First-year midfielder Kelli Kitchens (Roanoke, VA/William Byrd) scored on a free kick early in the second half to give Hollins the lead. The goal was her team leading fourth on the season. Just over a minute later, Alicia Johns (Locust Grove, VA/Orange, Co.) found the back of the net for the first time this season when she took a pass from Dani Franklin (Chesapeake Beach, MD/Northern) and beat the Sweet Briar keeper. Ashley Smith (Roanoke, VA/William Byrd) scored for the second time in her first season to put the game out of reach. Kristen Norkus (Gainesville, VA/Battlefield) recorded three saves en route to the win. Sweet Briar got a late goal from Emily Spivey to cut the lead to two goals with just under 25 minutes left in the game. Seanne Weekes stopped 11 Hollins shots as the road team enjoyed a 19-10 shot advantage. Hollins looks to make it two in a row when they play host to Randolph College on Saturday afternoon. The ODAC match-up will start at 2:00pm and Hollins will take a few minutes before the match to honor their seniors.
