Roanoke Wins Cross Town Matchup

Salem, VA - Hollins University Soccer at Roanoke College September 21, 2011

Box Score

Hollins traveled across town to face ODAC rival Roanoke College on Wednesday night.  Hollins came into the game looking to even their ODAC record after losing their ODAC opener this past Saturday at Randolph-Macon.  Hollins was able to reverse a recent trend by holding their opponent scoreless early in the matchup.  However, without being able to take an early lead, Hollins finally gave up two goals in a six minute stretch about midway through the first half.  Roanoke took a 2-0 lead into the break and came out on fire, adding four second half goals, and shut-out their cross town rival 6-0.

Hollins again had trouble on the offensive end and though the defense played well, they got worn down as the Maroons enjoyed a 27 shot advantage for the game.  Kristen Norkus (Gainesville, VA/Battlefield) recorded 13 saves as 19 Roanoke College shots were on the mark.

Roanoke got goals from five different players led by Sarah Valero's two tallies.  Lauren Schwartz, Rebekah Adams, Devon Harrell, and Laura Wood each added a goal for the Maroons while Carmen Graves handed out three assists.

Hollins will look to get back on track at home when they host Virginia Wesleyan College on Saturday afternoon.  The ODAC game is scheduled to start at 2:00pm.
