Danville, VA - Hollins University Soccer at Averett University October 23, 2009

Playing their fourth straight road match, the Hollins university soccer team traveled to face Averett University on Friday evening.  Hollins scored first but was unable to hold the lead and the match was tied 1-1 at the half.  The Cougars got an early second half goal and held on for the hard fought, 2-1, win.

Leading scorer Colleen Thamm (Manassas, VA/Battlefield) scored in the sixth minute when she beat the Averett keeper off a feed from Brooke Bruce (San Diego, CA/ Mission Bay), left,. Hollins held the lead for 20 minutes until the Cougars knotted the match on a goal by Silje Storstrand.  Hollins out-shot Averett 22-10 for the match but was unable to score for the final 84 minutes of play.

Mary-Kate Cogan tallied the eventually game winner for the home standing Cougars at the 50 minute mark.  Hillary Wood recorded two assists and Meghan Cole had a helper as well.  Keeper Samantha Lupo gave up the early goal but was able to rebound and record nine saves.

Hollins has a short turn around as they host Virginia Wesleyan tomorrow afternoon for a 3:00 start.
