RIDING

Hollins riders

Hollins University continues to field one of the nation’s strongest riding programs. Year after year, Hollins riders excel in the Intercollegiate Horse Show Association’s (IHSA) national championship, the country’s most prestigious championship for college equestrian teams. Hollins is a two-time winner of the IHSA national championship, having won in 1993 and 1998. In addition, the team has finished in the top ten 11 times since 1993. Hollins has had 16 individual IHSA national champions, and our riders have won the Cacchione cup four times.
It is challenging to qualify a team for nationals with so many competitive teams in Hollins’ region and zone, which includes 2005 national champion Virginia Intermont. However, in 2005, the Hollins team defeated Virginia Intermont at zones, breaking an intercollegiate record by qualifying for nationals for the eighth consecutive year. Hollins is the only IHSA team, among more than 300 nationwide, ever to have accomplished this feat.
No wonder Hollins was singled out by the 2005 Kaplan/Newsweek college guide as the nation’s “hottest riding school.”
