Eagles Fly Past Hollins

Roanoke, VA - Hollins University Lacrosse vs Bridgewater College, March 15, 2014

Box Score

A beautiful Saturday afternoon welcomed Hollins home for a one o'clock start against ODAC rival Bridgewater College.  Hollins came into the matchup looking for their first win of the season against an Eagle squad making their ODAC debut.

Hollins was able to keep the Eagles close during the opening part of the game as neither team scored for the first four minutes of play.  However, Bridgewater was able to break through in a big way, scoring five goals over the next five minutes.  Hollins couldn't find a way to slow the Eagles attack and as the time started to tick towards halftime, Bridgewater had built a double-digit lead.  Hollins finally broke through and scored in the final minute of the first half.

Hollins was not able to capitalize on their late first half momentum as it was Bridgewater that scored first to start the second stanza. Hollins tightened up the defense during the second 30 minutes but couldn't get anything going on the offensive end of the field as the Eagle keeper made three good stops to keep Hollins off the board.  Bridgewater added a few more goals to make the final score 22-1.

Brandi Chesne (New Orleans, LA) scored the lone Hollins goal, her second of the season.  Rikki Martinez (Corpus Christi, TX) had two terrific scoring chances that were both thwarted by the Bridgewater goalkeeper.  Maddie Horton (Irvine, CA) led the defense with six ground balls while picking up nine saves in goal.

Katie Freeman led the Bridgewater offensive attack with seven goals and two assists.  Jesse Colligan added four goals and three assists as 10 different Eagles scored on the afternoon.  Rachel Gruber went the distance in net, allowing just one goal and recording four saves.

Hollins will start a three game road trip on Wednesday as they head back to Lynchburg to face Sweet Briar College.  The annual battle of ODAC rivals is scheduled to start at 4:30pm.
