Hollins Continues To Struggle Offensively

Winchester, VA - Hollins University Lacrosse at Shenandoah University, March 29, 2014

Box Score

As the spring break ends for the Hollins campus community, the Hollins lacrosse team was back in ODAC action on Saturday afternoon.  After being off for over a week, Hollins played the first of their four game in nine day schedule as they traveled to face Shenandoah in a final match before their annual showdown with arch rival Sweet Briar College.

Hollins has struggled to find any offensive rhythm this season and they hoped that their practice time during the past week would help them in their conference matchup with the Hornets.  However it was the home team that was able to light up the scoreboard first.  Shenandoah netted three goals in the games opening five minutes.  Hollins was unable to stop the Hornets run and as the clock wound down to 00:00, it was the Hornets that enjoyed a 10-0 advantage at the break.

Hollins battles for the ground ball

As the second half got started, the home standing Hornets didn't show any signs of slowing down as the scored another quick goal to add to their lead.  Hollins was able to gain control of the ball by winning seven draws on the afternoon, but could not take advantage of their possessions and failed to score on any of their shots on goal.  The Hornets added to their lead throughout the second frame and at the final horn, enjoyed a 19-0 ODAC win.

Co-Captain Jessie Deese (Cary, NC) led Hollins with a pair of shots to go with her five draw controls, one ground ball, and one caused turnover.  Rikki Martinez (Corpus Christi, TX) recorded two shots, one draw control, and one ground ball.  Kelly Maxey (Leesburg, VA) recorded one save in her first start in net for Hollins.

The Shenandoah offense was led by Samantha Donaghy with five goal while Becky Bove added four.  Liz Bereit helped to account for seven scores, three goals and four assists. Brittany Arndt and Maggie Winterling each scored twice and Ashley Cross went the distance in goal, recording three saves en route to the shutout.

Hollins will have one day to regroup before they travel to face the Vixens on Monday afternoon.  The game, rescheduled after being postponed due to weather earlier in the season, is set to start at 5:00pm.
