Hall of Fame

 

Established in 1994, the Athletic Hall of Fame honors members of the Hollins community who have demonstrated superior athletic accomplishments at Hollins, as well as sportsmanship, character, and leadership at Hollins and/or in their community.

Induction of new members takes place at Alumnae Reunion each year. Nominations are due by February 15 for new members to be inducted at that year's Reunion.

Professor emeritus and director of athletics 1959-89; first associate commissioner of the Old Dominion Athletic Conference; coached four undefeated field hockey teams at Hollins in 1963, 1975, 1976, 1977; in 1979 the field hockey team won the VAIAW Field Hockey Championship; served as Director of Championships for the United States Women’s Lacrosse Association and the Director of the AIAW National Division III Field Hockey Championship; inducted into the James Madison Athletic Hall of Fame in 1998; the Old Dominion Athletic Award for the Outstanding Woman Athlete is named the Marjorie Berkley Award.

Guy "Red" Burkholder

Director of Riding Program, 1959-1985
Under Burkholder’s leadership, Hollins nearly tripled the number of riders and gained the national reputation and success it continues to enjoy today. He retired with a long list of honors: the Southwest Virginia Hunter/Jumper Hall of Fame in 1994, the Virginia Horse Shows Association’s Hall of Fame in 2002, the Virginia Horse Shows Association’s coveted Susan H. Hagan Award for lifetime achievement in 1999, and honorary lifetime member of the Rockbridge Hunt Club, where he served as field master.

Ann Davant Crehore '84

Played fullback on the Hollins soccer team from 1980 to 1983, was co-captain her senior year, and played on the lacrosse team. She was also the manager of the basketball team, dabbled in fencing, went on Hollins Outdoor Program trips, and was a lifeguard at the pool. Crehore loves to sail and race in regattas whenever possible, placing second in the William Adams IV Regatta at Camp Sea Gull.

Sandra Garrison Hodges '79

In 1977, Hodges was third in scoring in the Virginia Small College Basketball Division and placed second in the Appalachian Conference the following year with a 26.6 point average. She started all four years as right defensive wing on Hollins’ lacrosse team. Her senior season (1979) was the most successful in the history of the school’s lacrosse program, with an undefeated season and a state title for the first time in Hollins’ history.

Winner of more than 40 events including a record 19 Pennsylvania State amateurs; record-breaking 12 spots on the women's Curtis Cup Team.

Honorary member of the Virginia Women’s Lacrosse Association, the United States Women’s Lacrosse Association, and the International Women’s Lacrosse Association. USWLA Vice President 1980-86, IFWLA Vice President Rules and Umpiring 1984-91, IFWLA President 1993-2001.
