Weather Shortens Yellow Jacket Invite

Ashland, VA - Hollins University Golf at Spring Yellow Jacket Invitational hosted by Randolp-Macon College, March 24, 2014

Final Results

After a good showing at the Jekyll Island Collegiate, Hollins was back on the links when they traveled to compete in the Yellow Jacket Spring Invitational on Monday morning.  It marked the first of two events for the Hollins golfers during the week of Spring Break.  Hollins prepared to face ODAC foe Randolph-Macon as well as national powerhouse Methodist for the final time this regular season.

The tee times for the two day event were delayed by the weather, with the starting after 10:00am.  Elizabeth Cheng (Virginia Beach, VA) was looking to follow up her eight place finish at Jekyll with a solid showing against some of the best golfers in the region.  Cheng started slowly and finished the first round in a fifth place tie after an opening round 83.  Elizabeth, currently ranked 16th in NCAA DIII according to GolfStat, was looking forward to moving up the leader board on Tuesday but that was taken away as the event was cut to one day due to the weather moving into the Richmond area.

The other half of the Hollins duo, Shannon Ciccarello (Stafford, VA) added a top 20 finish in the field of 51 golfers.  Ciccarello finished her round with a 93 and bested 12 of the 17 ODAC golfers in the event.  For her first two events this spring, Shannon has a third and fifth place finish in relation to her fellow ODAC competitors.

The duo will compete in more comfortable surroundings on Sunday as they host Washington and Lee at Ashley Plantation.  The match will feature five players from W&L and a pair of golfers from Eastern Mennonite.  The one day event is scheduled to tee off at 11:00pm on Hollins home course.
