Cheng And Ciccarello Solid At Jekyll

Jekyll Island, GA - Hollins University Golf at 2014 Jekyll Island Colegiate, March 14-16, 2014

Final Results

Two Hollins golfers traveled to Georgia to compete in the prestigious Jekyll Island Collegiate over the weekend.  The three day event was held at the Indian Mound Golf Course on Jekyll Island and played at par 72 over 5,801 yards.  The field was comprised of 120 of the best golfers in the region, including 10 of the top 20 players in the nation.

Hollins sent a pair of golfers to challenge the nations best.  Senior Elizabeth Chang (Virginia Beach, VA) and first year Shannon Ciccarello (Stafford, VA) made the trip to not only to represent Hollins but as two of the 12 ODAC golfers that were teeing it up in the premiere women's golf tournament of the season.

Cheng, the 2013 Jekyll winner, looked to defend the championship that propelled her up the national rankings and all but secured her berth to the 2013 NCAA DIII National Championship.  Elizabeth posted a solid opening round 77 and was sitting in a tie for the lead going into day two.  Her second round was a mirror image of the first and after her second consecutive 77, Cheng was in contention for the title heading into the third and final round.  Elizabeth was not able to gain any sort of sustained momentum and posted a final round 80, good enough for an eighth place finish in the event.  Five of the seven players that finished ahead of Cheng on the final leader board were ranked in the top 10 in the nation.  Entering the event ranked 53rd in the nation, Elizabeth should see her stock rise when Golfstat releases the new national rankings.

Elizabeth and Shannon

After earning a pair of top six finishes in her first collegiate action back in the fall, Ciccarello seemed to be ready to face a much tougher field in her spring debut.  Shannon shook off the nerves and recovered from four tough holes to post a 91 in her opening round.  Ciccarello rebounded on day two and behind a start that saw a birdie on the third hole, improved by five strokes to post an 86.  Round three was the best of the weekend and saw Shannon make a big move up the leader board.  At the tournament's end, Ciccarello and her final round 82 was sitting in 67th place.  Of the twelve ODAC golfers in the field, Shannon bested all but one, reigning ODAC Tournament Champion Olivia Bowling from Randolph-Macon.

When the grueling three day event came to a close, the Hollins duo walked away with a good start to their spring season.  The pair will look to build on the solid start when they face a familiar field in next weeks Yellow Jacket Invitational hosted by Randolph Macon College.  The two day event will be held at the Hanover Country Club in Ashland, VA, March 24th and 25th.
