Cheng Wins Prestigious Event

Jekyll Island, GA - Hollins University Golf at 2013 Jekyll Island Collegiate hosted by Oglethorpe University March 17, 2013

Final Results

The Hollins University golf team headed south for their first tournament of the spring.  The destination was Jekyll Island Georgia for the prestigious Jekyll Island Collegiate Tournament.  The three day event was held at the Indian Mound Golf Club and played at par 72 for 5,830 yards.  Nine of the nation's top 20 teams were part of the 21 team field that featured 120 golfers including 11 of the top 20 players in the country.

Elizabeth Cheng (Virginia Beach, VA) won the event by three strokes over Theresa Damico of Olivet College.  Cheng, winner of three tournaments during the fall campaign, came into the event ranked 20th in the nation and needed a good showing to help her chances at earning a bid to the NCAA DIII Tournament later this spring.  After an opening round 81 saw Cheng sitting in 13th place, the junior posted a one under par 71 in the second round, the lowest round of the tournament, to take a four shot lead into Sunday's final round.  Cheng was solid with a closing 76 to earn the three shot victory, the biggest win of her career.  First-year Shelby Estes (Mt. Crawford, VA), on the back of an opening round 83, finished 67th.  Estes was only one shot from besting ever other ODAC golfer in the field.  Sydney Patrick (Flower Mound, TX) finished just three shots behind Estes.  Patrick had a solid tournament, shooting all three rounds in the 80's.  Gabby Radar (San Antonio, TX) rounded out the Hollins lineup and helped the team to move up on the final day by lowering her score each of the three days of play.

After finishing 15th at Jekyll, Hollins will make a stop in South Carolina for a dual match with McDaniel College on Tuesday before heading back to Roanoke to take the rest of the spring break off before returning to classes.
