The Hollins golf team closed out its Spring 2010 season with a huge win at the Gettysburg Spring Invitational on April 18. Coach Bill Mannino’s squad shot a season-low first round of 371 en route to victory over eight other colleges.
J.R. Woolwine ’12 paced the Hollins team with a two-day total of 170.
"I am so happy for our golfers," said Mannino, who is in his third season as Hollins’ coach. "It was a total team effort and all of their hard work against impressive competition paid off."
Hollins faced difficult foes throughout the spring, beginning at the Orchard Invitational in Georgia, which was hosted by the nation’s 25th ranked team, Piedmont College. Next they took on #23 SUNY Cortland in Pinehurst, North Carolina, and then they held their own as the only Division III team in the field at the Lady Herd Spring Classic, hosted by Marshall University.
"We do play a tough schedule, but we choose to because it’s a great way to get ready to play top-notch teams from the Northeast and out West," explained Mannino. "The more we take on ranked teams, the better we’re going to get." The Hollins University golf team won the Pinehurst Tri Match over Franklin & Marshall and St. Andrews College in March. The other finishes were 10th at the Sally Wallace Invitational, Cortland, New York, and 4th at the Elmira Invitational, Elmira, New York.
Hollins golf team members are drying out their spikes from the soggy fall schedule and looking forward to an exciting spring.
"Out of the nine days that we were to compete this fall, four of them were cancelled due to rain and the rest were cold and rainy. Hopefully, our spring events will be warmer and dryer," said Coach Bill Mannino.

The golf team spent an afternoon volunteering in the kitchen at the Roanoke Rescue Mission.
