Hollins vs. Sweet Briar, February 2, 2005
Hollins fencers beat Sweet Briar 20-10. In foil, Hollins won 7-2 with Melissa Larkin and Whitney Scanton winning 2 bouts. Erin Gayle, Rose O'Connor and Martha Gregor each won one match. In Epee, Hollins won 9-3. Amanda Furgiuele, Lori Jarocki and Jill Ullrich each won 3 matches. In Saber, Hollins lost 4-5. Meghan Moore and Ruth Link won 1 match each and Amanda Furgiuele won 2 matches.
Hollins vs. Stevens, February 12, 2005
Hollins lost to Stevens Varsity team 7-20. In epee, Hollins lost 7-2. In foil, Hollins lost 6-3 and in Saber the Hollins fencers lost 7-2.
Hollins vs. James Madison, February 12, 2005
Hollins beat the James Madison Varsity team 18-9. In epee, Hollins won 6-3. In foil, Hollins lost 6-3 and in Saber the Hollins fencers won 9-0 by default.
Hollins vs. Mary Washington, February 12, 2005
Hollins lost to Mary Washington 12-15. In epee, Hollins won 5-4. In foil, Hollins won 6-3 and in Saber the Hollins fencers lost 8-1.
VIWFA Tournament, February 19, 2005
The Hollins University fencing team won the Epee Competition and took second place overall at the Virginia Intercollegiate Women’s Fencing Association (VIWFA) Tournament, held February 19 on the Hollins campus.
Hollins competed against fencing teams from Virginia Tech, the University of Virginia, James Madison University, Mary Baldwin College, and Sweet Briar College. Virginia Tech took first place overall.
The VIWFA Tournament consisted of competitions in the Epee, Foil, and Sabre categories. Hollins took first place in Epee with 29 victories, followed by Virginia Tech (27) and Mary Baldwin (25). Hollins finished fourth and sixth in the Foil and Sabre competitions, respectively.
Hollins team members include Whitney Stanton ’08, Melissa Larkin ’05, and Erin Rieple ’08 (Foil); Lora Jarocki ’07, Jillian Ullrich ’08, and Martha Gregor ’08 (Epee); and Megan Morse ’06, Ruth Link ’08, and Heather Short ’07 (Sabre). Gregor, seeded third in the individual Epee competition, went on to take third place in that category against 16 other fencers.
After enjoying extreme success as a varsity sport, the Hollins fencing team has competed as a club sport since 2002. They compete against other club and varsity teams. Hollins offers fencing as a physical education class. Beginners are encouraged to try this Olympic sport at Hollins.
The following are Hollins fencing highlights:
- Hollins varsity fencers were chosen twelve times to compete in the NCAA Regionals in foil, epee and sabre.
- The 1996 foil team won the Sportsmanship Award at the National Intercollegiate Women's Fencing Association 68th Annual Championships.
- The 1997 foil team won the Sportsmanship Award at the National Intercollegiate Women's Fencing Association 69th Annual Championships.
- At the 1998 Virginia Intercollegiate Fencing tournament, Hollins was second overall, second in epee, and third in foil.
- At the 1998 National Intercollegiate Women's Fencing Association tournament, the team placed 8th overall, 7th in epee team, and 11th in foil. Hollins competed in a strong field that included teams from Temple, James Madison, Vassar, Stevens, Johns Hopkins, Fairleigh Dickinson, Drew, UVA, United States Military Academy, Bard, Hunter, Haverford, and CUNY.
- Hollins was the 1997 state champion, placing first in epee and second in foil.
- In the 1995-96 season, Hollins was second overall, second in foil, and third in epee at the Virginia Intercollegiate Fencing tournament.
- Hollins won the foil championship in 1994-95 at the Virginia Intercollegiate Fencing tournament.
- The fencing team won the Alumnae Award for Academic Excellence five times including every year it was a varsity sport.
