Hollins Comes Up Just Short |

The Hollins University basketball team hosted Mary Baldwin in a non-conference game on Friday night. Trailing by three points with 12 seconds left, Hollins scored to make it a one point game. After a steal with five seconds left, Hollins us unable to score the winning basket as a last second shot fell short. Mary Baldwin defeated Hollins 63-62. For the second consecutive game, Hollins fell behind by double digits in the first half. After trailing by 10 at the break, Hollins battled back and was able to take a seven point lead with five minutes in the game. Mary Baldwin came back when they hit two three pointers and corralled four straight offensive rebounds. The Squirrels took a four point lead late in the game but Hollins came back to cut it to one with five seconds left. After a timeout Hollins came up with a steal but with two seconds left a three pointer came up short. First year guard, Jasmine Greene (Hampton, VA/Tabb), left, scored a game high 22 points. Tamara Phillips (Roanoke, VA/Lord Botetourt) scored 16 points and a team high eight rebounds. Candace Berra (Buchanan, VA/James River) added seven for the home team. Crystal Churchman scored 18 for the visitors. Kara Hawkins scored six points a a game high 13 rebounds. Mary Baldwin out-rebounded Hollins 52-41. Hollins will return to action when they host ODAC rival Washington & Lee University on Monday night, November 30. The game will tip at 7:00pm. |
