Hollins Comeback Win Ends Losing Streak |

The Hollins University basketball team opened their 2009-2010 season with a come from behind win over visiting Gallaudet University. The Bison built leads of 11 and 14 in the first half before the young Hollins squad mounted their comeback. Junior Tamara Phillips (Roanoke, VA/Lord Botetourt), bottom left, hit five three pointers in the first half to help rally Hollins from an early deficit. After Phillips completed a four point play late in the half Hollins was able to cut a 14 point lead to two at the break. Phillips and first year guard Jasmine Greene (Hampton, VA/Tabb), top, continued to lead Hollins through the second half. After a three point play by Greene at the 3:34 mark, Hollins took their first lead of the second half. Gallaudet answered right back when Brittany Payne scored to make it 68-67. Lacie Forrest (Richmond, VA/Meadowbrook) hit a fade away jumper to give Hollins the lead with just 2:39 left to play. Hollins never trailed again en route to the 78-74 season opening win. The win broke a 63 game losing streak for Hollins. Greene ended her debut with a game high 31 points. Phillips scored 23 points to go along with four assists. Kendra McCain (Gentry, AR/Gentry) scored nine points and eight rebounds while Brittany Hanavan (Wilton, CT/Wilton) added 2 points, five assists, and seven rebounds. Gallaudet had four players score in double digits. Payne led the way with 18 while Easter Faafiti added 17 and Shaquana McDonough chipped in 16. Amy Bachtel hit two late three pointers en route to 11 points. Hollins will host Mary Baldwin College on Friday night. The game tips at 7:00pm. |
