Turnovers Haunt Hollins

Raleigh, NC - Hollins University Basketball vs Salem College at William Peace Tournament, November 17, 2012

Box Score

After falling in their season opener the Hollins basketball team was back on the court Saturday afternoon.  Hollins faced off against Salem College in the consolation game of the Jackie Ammons Memorial Tournament hosted by William Peace University.

After coming up short last night against Washington College (58-68), Hollins was looking to get off to a good start against Salem.  Hollins shot over 48% during the first half but still found themselves on the short end of a 39-34 score.  The second half started with Hollins hanging around by playing excellent defense, limiting Salem to just 26.7% from the floor for the game.  However Hollins struggled to take care of the ball on the offensive end of the floor and despite out-shooting their opponent, they could not overcome their 32 turnovers and fell to Salem 67-75.

Senior guard Jasmine Greene (Hampton, VA) led all scorers with 27 points.  Greene added a team high six rebounds and four assists but was the only Hollins player to reach double digits.  First-year Auburn Smith (Las Vegas, NV) scored seven points to go with her five rebounds and three assists.  Junior post player Chanci Wright (Eden, TX) scored six and grabbed five rebounds while Lacie Forrest (Richmond, VA) added six points, six rebounds, and three assists.

Satavia Taylor led Salem with 12 points and 11 rebounds.  Shaquina Collins and Jasmine Shabazz each added 11 points while Shamaz Denerson grabbed nine rebounds.  Despite shooting less than 27% from the field, Salem grabbed 34 offensive rebounds while forcing 32 Hollins turnovers.

Hollins will return home before traveling to face Mary Baldwin on Tuesday night.  The game with the Squirrels is scheduled to tip at 7:00pm.
