Rematch Goes To Yellow Jackets

Roanoke, VA - Hollins University Basketball vs Randolph-Macon College, February 8, 2014

Box Score

Saturday marked the final home weekend game of the season for the Hollins basketball team.  Prior to their tip-off with Randolph-Macon, Hollins took a few moments to honor their three seniors.  With a full house and their families in attendance, Brandi Chesne (New Orleans, LA) Carrie Cox (Lynch Station, VA), and Chanci Wright (Eden, TX) were saluted by family, teammates, coaches, and fans for all they have done over the past four seasons.  The game with the Yellow Jackets was a rematch of a game in Ashland back in early December.

After the pregame festivities came to a close, Hollins road their wave of momentum by scoring the first five points of the matchup.  The Yellow Jackets battled back but Hollins matched their visitors basket for basket for much of the first half.  I an opening 20 minutes that saw both teams take their turn in the lead, five first half lead changes, the game was tied at 29-29 with less than three minutes to play before the break.  Randolph-Macon used a 5-0 run to end the half with the lead, 34-29.  Neither team could capitalize on their lead as the other would not allow the leader to pull away.

The second half opened with a Yellow Jacket run that stunned the home crowd.  Randolph Macon quickly built their lead to 13 points during the first two minutes of the second frame.  After a Hollins timeout, the home team went on a quick and exciting 7-0 run to once again make the Yellow Jacket advantage just five points.  It was the second of many runs during a second half that would see the heavily favored Jackets pull away to a 13 or 14 point lead before Hollins would cut the lead back to seven.  However, as the clock started to wind down, Hollins could not get any closer than seven and in the end it was their visitors from Ashland that came out of the game with a hard fought 83-71 ODAC win.

Brandi Chesne takes it to the hoop

For the second straight Saturday, Chesne posted double digits by leading Hollins with 16 points.  The senior post player added seven rebounds and a pair of assists before fouling out late in the contest.  Fellow post player Wright enjoyed another stellar afternoon on the glass.  Chanci tallied six points to go with her 15 rebounds and four blocked shots.  Leading scorer Jewell Parfitt (Roanoke, VA) hit a trio of shots from beyond the arc en route to 11 first half points.  The first-year guard finished the afternoon with 14 points, three assists and a pair of steals.  Taylor Catron (Tazewell, VA) added 13 points, three rebounds, and a game high five helpers.

Sarah Parsons paced four Yellow Jackets in double figures with 16 points.  Taylor Huber found the mark on only four of her 19 attempts while adding 11 points.  Katie Anderson and Hannah Livermon added 10 points each and Lauren Vugteveen came off the bench to grab a team high seven rebounds.

Hollins will face off with their cross-town rival, Roanoke College on Wednesday night.  The game against the Maroons will be played in Salem and is scheduled to tip at 7:00pm.
