A new season saw Hollins open up with a game against Mary Baldwin College on Tuesday night. Hollins, with a 15 player roster void of seniors, took the court looking to get off to a fast start to the season against the Squirrels. Hollins struggled to find their offense as the visitors raced out to a 7-0 lead. Hollins responded and by virtue of a 15-2 run, took a three point lead about mid-way through the first half. The Squirrels regrouped and went on a run of their own en route to taking an 11 point halftime lead. Every time Hollins made a little run, Mary Baldwin responded and held the home team at arms length most of the second half. However, a late Hollins rally cut the game to three with just under 30 seconds left to play. Hollins missed a game tying attempt and could get no closer as Mary Baldwin came to Roanoke and left with a hard fought 69-65 win. Despite turning over Mary Baldwin 31 times and getting off 26 more shots than their visitors, Hollins ultimately lost the game at the free throw line where they made only eight of 22 attempts. First-year forward Lauren Morris (Morehead, NC/Croatan) scored 22 points and grabbed a team high 10 rebounds in her first collegiate game. Morris helped to lead the comeback by hitting six of her nine three point attempts. Jasmine Greene (Hampton, VA/Tabb) also scored 22 points while adding seven rebounds and handing out five assists. Chanci Wright (Eden, TX/Eden) had eight points and nine rebounds before fouling out late in the contest. Mary Baldwin was lead by first-year guard Shanice Miles and her 22 points. Miles went 13 for 17 from the free throw line and helped to lead the Squirrels to a huge advantage from the charity stripe, where they made 25 more free throws than Hollins. Sabrina Desper added 11 points and nine rebounds while Shamanda Washington came off the bench to score 14. Hollins will go on the road for a tournament at McDaniel College this weekend. Hollins will play the host at 6:00pm on Friday night. |
