Hollins in a Thriller

Roanoke, VA - Hollins University Basketball vs Hood College, January 7, 2013

Box Score

Monday saw Hollins step out of conference when they played host to Hood College.  Having not tasted a victory in the new year, Hollins was looking to get back in the win column against the visiting Blazers.  Hollins was the fourth ODAC team that Hood has played this season.

The game didn't start as well as Hollins would have hoped, falling behind 6-0 to start the matchup.  After a time out, Hollins responded to go on a 8-0 run to take their first lead of the evening.  However, the lead was short lived as Hood again surged ahead of their hosts and led by as many as 14 before Hollins mounted a rally.  Hollins couldn't overcome 13 first half turnovers and found themselves trailing by 11 at the break.  For the first five minutes of the second stanza Hollins could not cut into the deficit and at the 10:52 mark still found themselves down by double-digits.  That is when the home team started their rally and after a three pointer at the 4:14 mask, took their first lead since early in the game.  That's when the real fun began.  The two teams took turns with the lead and the game was tied going into its final minute.  Hollins took a two point advantage with 52.9 seconds remaining but found themselves down by three just 30 seconds later.  After a timeout, Hollins set up a play to get a look at a game tying three pointer that found the bottom of the net and the game was again tied with 16 seconds left in regulation.  Hollins forced a Blazer turnover but a buzzer beating shot was just off the mark and the game went to overtime.  Hood drained a 25 foot three pointer to open the scoring but 45 seconds later Hollins hit a shot from long range to tie the score at 69-69.  From that point on Hollins out-scored their visitors from Maryland 7-2 the rest of the way picking up their second overtime victory of the season.

Jasmine Greene (Hampton, VA) scored just four points in eight minutes of action in the first half due to foul trouble.  However the senior came out on fire in the second half and overtime and finished with a game high 30 points to go with her eight rebounds, three assists, and four steals.  First-year post player Ella Oakley (Queanbeyan, Australia) added 10 points and five rebounds while Britney Campbell (Silver Spring, MD) came off the bench with 14 points and five rebounds.  Lauren Hays (Saginaw, TX) grabbed a team high nine rebounds to go with her six points.  Hollins was down three points in the final seconds before Carrie Cox (Lynch Station, VA) nailed a game tying three ball.

Shakara Head finished with 19 points and 16 rebounds after leading the Blazers with 15 first half points.   Briana Lee went four of six from downtown en route to 16 points while leading scorer Dyanna Prater added 12.

Hollins will look to ride the momentum gained tonight when they host Emory & Henry College on Wednesday night.  The ODAC game with the Wasps is scheduled to tip at 7:00pm.
