Hollins Comes Up Short in Opener

The Hollins University basketball team opened their 2012-13 season with a trip to Raleigh to compete in the William Peace Tip-Off Tournament.  Hollins drew the host Pacers in the opener and fell 68-58.  Hollins will play Salem College in the consolation game tomorrow at 1:00pm.

After being selected seventh in the 12 team ODAC Preseason Poll, Hollins was looking to get off to a quick start to the season.  Hollins struggled to get the ball in the basket in the first half, shooting just 18.8% on their 32 field goal attempts.  Due to their poor shooting, Hollins found themselves on the short end of a 41-25 halftime score.  Hollins gathered themselves at the break and came out strong in the second stanza.  The visitors won the second half but it wasn't enough as William Peace held on for the season opening win.

After replacing two starters from last years team with a pair of first-year players, senior guard Jasmine Greene (Hampton, VA) led Hollins with 15 points.  Greene struggled from the field but hit 11 of her 13 free throw attempts to pace Hollins.  First-year post player Alexa Smith (Barboursville, VA) scored 10 while fellow first timer Auburn Smith (Las Vegas, NV) added three points and four assists.  Chanci Wright (Eden, TX) anchored the interior by scoring nine points and grabbing a team high eight rebounds.

William Peace was led by Krystal Williams and Crystal Alston, each with 17 points.  11 rebounds apiece by Derrica Jones and Callie Yohn helped the Pacers to a 60-49 advantage on the glass.  Yohn added 13 points while Alston recorded a game high six steals.

Hollins will look to rebound tomorrow as the play Salem College at 1:00pm.
