Marlins Stave Off Hollins Rally

Va. Beach, VA - Hollins University Basketball at Virginia Wesleyan College, February 15, 2014

Box Score

Saturday saw the Hollins basketball team leave their snow covered grounds for a trip to Virginia Beach to face the Marlins of Virginia Wesleyan.  After moving up their game against Roanoke College to avoid the massive snow, Hollins faced their second consecutive road game of the week against a Marlin squad that needed overtime to defeat Hollins back January 25th.

Hollins showed no sign of the long, four hour bus ride by racing out to the lead during the early stages of the game.  However, the Hollins lead was short-lived as their hosts took the lead and began to stretch out their advantage.  Virginia Wesleyan controlled much of the action during a first half that saw the Marlins build their lead to as many as 18.  At the break Hollins had trimmed the lead by a basket as Virginia Wesleyan enjoyed a 41-25 halftime lead.

After enjoying the break to gatherer themselves, Hollins started the second half on a mission.  The road team seized the momentum of the game and cut the Virginia Wesleyan lead to seven with 13:00 minutes left to play.  The Marlins stopped the Hollins run and regained their double digit advantage, leading by 15 points with less than 10 minutes to go.  Hollins again began to cut the Virginia Wesleyan lead and trailed, 58-48, with 3:30 left in the contest.  Hollins outscored the Marlins 11-4 the rest of the way but it wasn't enough as Virginia Wesleyan held off a game Hollins squad, 62-59, for the ODAC victory.
