Hornets Halt Hollins Streak

Winchester, VA - Hollins University Basketball at Shenandoah University, February 2, 2013

Box Score

On Saturday afternoon, the Hollins basketball team completed their third straight ODAC road game with a trip to Shenandoah University.  Hollins was looking to defeat the Hornets, in their first season of ODAC play, for their fourth conference win of the season.

Hollins started the game by scoring the opening basket but the lead was short lived as Shenandoah took the lead and held it for the first 10 minutes of play.  Hollins tied the score at 10-10 but over the second part of the first half the Hornets dominated play.  Hollins scored just four points in the final 10 minutes of play and when the halftime buzzer sounded Shenandoah had built a 36-14 lead.  Neither team did much to start the second half as only four points were scored over the first seven minutes of play.  One play at a time, Hollins started to close the sizable Hornet gap.  Hollins closed to within six points going into the final minute of play but could not complete the comeback and fell to Shenandoah, 59-49.

The ODAC's leading scorer Jasmine Greene (Hampton, VA) scored a game high 27 points, her fourth consecutive 20+ point performance.  Greene added four rebounds, three assists, and three steals.  Senior guard Lacie Forrest (Richmond, VA) scored eight points to go with her five rebounds, and two steals.  Chanci Wright (Eden, TX) made all four of her free throw attempts to score six points and added a team high seven rebounds.

Shenandoah was led by Nicole Gilbertson and her 14 points and 14 rebounds.  Crystal Petrus added 10 points and seven rebounds while Imani Heggins scored eight.

Hollins will return home on Wednesday night when they play host to reigning ODAC Champions Guilford College.  The game with the Quakers will tip at 7:00pm and can be seen live on the web, brought to you by First Team Broadcasting.
