Hollins Can't Solve Roanoke Puzzle

Salem, VA - Hollins University Basketball at Roanoke College, January 2, 2013

Box Score

The second day of the new year saw Hollins travel across town to face ODAC rival Roanoke College.  It was the first of two meetings against the Maroons.  Hollins came into the match-up looking for their first win against ODAC competition this season.

Hollins opened the scoring by hitting a three pointer in the opening minutes and found themselves with a quick lead against their hosts.  The lead was short lived as the home team surged ahead and pushed the lead to as many as 12 before a late four point Hollins run saw the road team down eight at the half.  The second half saw Hollins come out and quickly cut the lead to a single point with 11 minutes left to play.  Roanoke again went on a run and built the lead back up to as many as 12.  One last Hollins run saw the visitors cut the lead to seven and poised to make it five but a layup rolled off the rim and after a transition bucket by the Maroons the lead was again nine.  Roanoke made their free throws down the stretch and held on for the 65-53 victory.

Jasmine Greene (Hampton, VA) recorded a double-double by scoring 13 points and pulling down a team high 10 rebounds.  Greene also dished out a game high six assists and three steals.  Lacie Forrest (Richmond, VA) hit six of her 11 shots en route to 13 points while adding five rebounds.  Britney Campbell (Silver Spring, MD) scored seven points to go with her seven rebounds while Racheal Crowder (Buena Vista, VA) added five points off the bench.

Paxton Gwin scored a game high 27 points on 10 of 13 shooting.  Laurel Hankins produced a double-double of her own by scoring 10 points and claiming 10 rebounds.  Tatum McKee added nine and Rachel Dellehunt scored seven.

Hollins will be back on the court looking for that elusive first ODAC win on Saturday when they play host to Virginia Wesleyan College at 2:00pm.
