2012 Ending Loss for Hollins

Raleigh, NC - Hollins University Basketball at Meredith College, December 30, 2012

Box Score

As 2012 draws to a close, Hollins went on the road searching for one final victory before the new year.  Raleigh, NC was the destination for a Hollins team looking to win consecutive games for the first time this season as they took on Meredith College on Sunday afternoon.

The Angels were looking to avenge a loss in Roanoke last year and took the lead early against their visitors.  Meredith pushed the lead to as many as eight before Hollins battled back to tie the score midway through the first half.  The home team again surged ahead, this time stretching the lead to 14.  However, Hollins would not let the Avenging Angels pull away and found themselves down just seven at the break.  Hollins came out strong in the second half and cut the lead to one in just five minutes of play.  For the next five minutes the two teams played even and with about 10 minutes left to play, Meredith enjoyed a one point cushion.  Despite continued pressure from Hollins, the road team could never get out in front and fell 74-65.

Chanci Wright (Eden, TX) set a Hollins record for field goal percentage going a perfect nine for nine from the field, besting the previous record of eight for eight set by Brandi Cochran in 2004.  Wright scored 22 points to go with her 12 rebounds and eight steals.  Reigning ODAC Player of the Week Jasmine Greene (Hampton, VA) added 16 points before fouling out down the stretch.  First-year guard Kelly Maxey (Leesburg, VA) scored eight points while Brandi Chesne (Hammond, LA) and Carrie Cox (Lynch Station, VA) tallied five points apiece.

Keyanka Bailey scored a game high 24 points to go with a team leading four steals.  Kristen Alford came off the bench to add 12 points and Rebekah Cox hit double-digits with 10.

Hollins will take a short break to ring int he new year before traveling to cross-town rival Roanoke College on Wednesday.  The ODAC game with the Maroons is scheduled to tip at 7:00pm.
