Guilford Pulls Away in Second Half

Greensboro, NC - Hollins University Basketball at Guilford College, January 15, 2013

Box Score

After picking up their first ODAC win on Saturday afternoon, Hollins traveled to North Carolina to face reigning ODAC champion Guilford College.  The Quakers were selected first in the ODAC preseason poll and came into tonight's matchup sitting atop the conference standings.

The first half was a competitive affair that witnessed a pair of lead changes and four ties.  The home team took the lead early in the half and built the lead to as many as four before Hollins seized control and surged ahead.  The road team held the lead until the closing minutes of the half.  With 2:30 left to play Hollins enjoyed a six point lead until Guilford closed the half on an 8-2 run to tie the score at 28-28.  The second half again saw a see-saw battle and with 14 minutes left to play the game was tied for the seventh and final time.  Guilford took the lead and control of the game as the Quakers built the lead to double digits over the next 10 minutes of play.  Hollins played well but in the end it was the home team that came away with a hard fought 68-53 ODAC victory.

Auburn Smith (Las Vegas, NV) came off the bench to pace Hollins with 14 points on five of seven shooting.  Britney Campbell (Silver Spring, MD) scored 12 points while Lacie Forrest (Richmond, VA) and Alexa Smith (Barboursville, VA) added eight points each.  Smith grabbed a team high eight rebounds and Kelly Maxey (Leesburg, VA) handed out a game high four assists.

Brittany Drew led three Quakers in double-digits with 16 points.  Brittany Atwater added 15 and Morgan King 10.  Last year's ODAC Player of the Year Gabby Oglesby scored nine points and pulled down a team high eight rebounds.

Hollins returns home on Friday for an out of conference game against Warren Wilson.  Friday's game is scheduled to tip at 7:00pm.
