Wasps Hold Off Hollins

Emory, VA - Hollins University Basketball at Emory & Henry College, January 29, 2014

Box Score

After taking Virginia Wesleyan to overtime on Saturday afternoon, the Hollins basketball team took to the road in search of an ODAC win at Emory & Henry College.  With a win, Hollins would move up the conference standings by passing the Wasps and improving their odds at gaining a favorable matchup in the end of season ODAC Tournament.

The game between the ODAC rivals was the first of two meetings scheduled to take place over the next three weeks.  The teams split the season series last year, with each team winning on the others home court.  Hollins looked to build on the momentum of taking the Marlins to overtime on Saturday by getting off to a quick start.  The visitors got the start they were looking for by scoring the first four points of the game.  Hollins held the lead for the first five minutes and after the Wasps tied the game, Hollins once again gained the advantage.  With just over four minutes remaining in the first half, Hollins took their biggest lead of the game, 29-18.  However, Emory & Henry scored the final 14 points of the half and carried a 32-29 lead into the break.

Hollins came out in the second half and quickly regained control of the matchup and built their lead to four points.  The game was tied up with 15 minutes left to play and that's when Emory & Henry started to feed off their home crowd and pull away from their visitors from the north.  The Wasps saw the lead grow to as many as 13 points before Hollins responded and began to cut into the lead.  Hollins got as close as six but it wasn't enough as Emory & Henry held on for a 71-63 conference victory.

Jewell Parfitt (Roanoke, VA) recorded the first double-double of her young career.  The first-year guard posted team highs in points (16) and rebounds (10).  Parfitt also handed out four assists in her 36 minutes of play.  Ella Oakley (Primrose Valley, NSW) provided Hollins with a solid inside punch by scoring 13 points to go with her five rebounds and four blocked shots.  Racheal Crowder (Buena Vista, VA) came off the bench to add nine points while senior guard Carrie Cox (Lynch Station, VA) hit two of four from beyond the arc en route to eight points.

Emory & Henry saw four different starters hit the double figure mark.  Karina Farr led the Wasps with 15 points and 15 rebounds.  Anna Green scored 13 points while Megan Jacoby scored 12 and Kristie Langley added 11.

Hollins will return home this weekend for a re-match with Washington and Lee.  Hollins defeated the Generals earlier this season in a non-conference matchup in Lexington.  The game with Washington and Lee is scheduled to tip at 2:00pm.
