Rematch Goes To The Royals

Harrisonburg, VA - Hollins University Basketball at Eastern Mennonite University, January 18, 2014

Box Score

After facing the defending ODAC champions, Guilford College, on their home court, Hollins was again on the road to face one of the conferences elite teams.  Hollins traveled to face Eastern Mennonite, the preseason pick to win the conference, in a rematch of an earlier game that saw the Royals come away with a double digit win.

Hollins needed to get off to a quick start against an Eastern Mennonite team that had handed them their most lopsided defeat of the season back in late November.  The visitors got exactly what they needed in the early stages of the matchup.  Hollins was able to keep the game close and not let the Royals build their lead to more than nine points during the first half.  After connecting on four of their five attempts from beyond the three point line, Hollins found themselves down just two points as the half came to a close.  With just seconds on the clock, Hollins missed a pair of free throws that would have allowed them to tie the game at the break.

The second half started with both teams trading baskets for much of the first 10 minutes of play.  Hollins scored on a stick back and then hit another three pointer to take the lead.  Hollins held a 48-46 lead with just under six minutes left to play.  However, the more experienced Royals scored a three point play to re-take the lead and then went on a run to try and close out their guests.  Behind five more three pointers in the second half, Hollins kept Eastern Mennonite from pulling away and the game remained close down the stretch.  However, after Hollins cut the lead to seven, Eastern Mennonite turned up the defensive pressure and Hollins committed a pair of late turnovers that prevented them from cutting the lead any further and fell to the heavily favored Royals, 70-60.

The first year backcourt duo of Taylor Catron (Tazewell, VA) and Jewell Parfitt (Roanoke, VA) led the Hollins offensive attack with 14 points apiece.  The pair each grabbed three rebounds and combined to hit of six of their nine attempts from long range.  Chanci Wright (Eden, TX) scored nine points and pulled down a game high 11 rebounds.  Amber Markovitz (Branford, CT) added six points and five rebounds while Britney Campbell (Silver Spring, MD) came off the bench to hand out a game high six assists.

Eastern Mennonite was led by the inside/outside tandem of Alisa Brown and Shakeerah Sykes.  Brown scored a game high 19 points from the perimeter while Sykes provided punch down low with 16 points and nine rebounds.

Hollins will complete their three game stretch against the top three teams in the ODAC preseason poll when they play host to Lynchburg College on Wednesday night.  The Hornets are currently tied atop the ODAC standings.
